The Halcyon Experience
A Mental Health Service
The story of the Halcyon (hal-see-un), more commonly known as the kingfisher bird, is one of hope and love in times of despair. This Greek myth tells the story of Alcyone and Ceyx.
Ceyx, while on a voyage, drowned at sea. Alcyone who was distraught over losing him was transformed into a seabird by the Gods, so she could be with him. They named her Halcyon.
During her time at sea, she was able to nest only during winter when the strong winds would wash away her eggs. She was then given the ability to create a time of calm winds and good weather enabling her to watch over her hatchlings as they learnt to fly.
Halcyon is now a symbol of hope, tranquility and serenity that can bring relief.
This story reached out to us in a way that connected to our lives and professions and encouraged us to start The Halcyon Experience (THE).
We work with adults, children and adolescents through an integrated approach imbued with inclusivity, acceptance and mutual respect.
At THE, we as a team of young mental health professionals believe that all of us have the capability to find and become our own Halcyons.
